EVENT SUMMARY:

The 2nd Energy Security and Chemical Engineering Congress (ESChE 2021) was organized by the Centre for Research in Advanced Fluid and Processes (Fluid Centre), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Malaysia, from 3rd to 5th November 2021. Held as a virtual conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event centered on the theme "Sustainable Technological Solutions for a Better World".

The conference was conducted in collaboration with prestigious academic institutions, including Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU), Vietnam, Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU), Vietnam, and the University of Stavanger (UiS), Norway. It was sponsored by JEOL (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., reflecting strong support from the industry.

The virtual conference attracted 126 participants from Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, facilitating a diverse exchange of knowledge and insights.

Conference Highlights:

  • Day 1 (3rd November 2021):
The event began with participant registration, setting the stage for insightful discussions and knowledge sharing.

  • Day 2 (4th November 2021):

    • The opening session commenced with the arrival of participants and VIPs, followed by a recitation of Du'a.
    • A welcoming speech by the emcees and the Chairman of ESChE 2021, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Fairusham bin Ghazali was delivered, leading to the opening speech and officiation of the event by YBhg. Professor Dato' Ts. Dr. Yuserrie bin Zainuddin DIMP, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP).
    • The session featured a montage presentation and sponsor acknowledgments. Afterward, the parallel sessions began with speakers presenting their research.
    • Keynote Speaker Presentations:
      • Industrial Keynote Speaker:

The industrial keynote session featured Mr. Muhamad Afiq bin Ahmad, the Head of Resident, ZLNG, Gas and New Energy, PETRONAS. His presentation focused on "Root Cause & Failure Analysis (RCFA) & Robustness Improvement of Turbomachinery Lubrication Systems for Air Separation Units."

In his talk, Mr. Muhamad Afiq delved into the critical aspects of diagnosing and addressing failures in turbomachinery lubrication systems, a vital component in air separation units used in various industrial processes. He emphasized the importance of Root Cause and Failure Analysis (RCFA) as a systematic approach to identifying underlying issues and implementing robust solutions to enhance system reliability and performance. His insights were particularly valuable for industries aiming to improve operational efficiency and ensure sustainability in energy-related processes.

      • Virtual Keynote Speaker 1:

The first virtual keynote was delivered by Dr. Gopalakrishnan Kumar, an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering at the University of Stavanger (UiS), Norway. His presentation was titled "Waste and Biomass Valorization for Bioenergy and Bioproducts via Circular Economy in the Norwegian Context."

Dr. Gopalakrishnan highlighted innovative approaches to converting waste and biomass into valuable energy resources and bioproducts. He explored the concept of circular economy, demonstrating how Norway integrates sustainable practices into waste management and biomass utilization. By showcasing successful examples, he provided a roadmap for achieving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact through bioenergy and bioproducts.

      • Virtual Keynote Speaker 2:

The second virtual keynote session was presented by Dr. Luqman Chuah bin Abdullah, a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia. His topic was "Technologies for Oil and Gas Produced Water Treatment: Overview and Development."

Prof. Luqman’s presentation provided an overview of advanced technologies for treating produced water, a significant byproduct of oil and gas operations. He discussed challenges associated with produced water, including environmental impacts and treatment costs, and also highlighted innovative treatment solutions. His talk emphasized the development of efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable methods to manage the industrial waste, contributing to environmental preservation and resource recovery in the oil and gas sector.

  • Day 3 (5th November 2021):
The final day continued with parallel sessions that provided in-depth discussions and presentations on specialized topics. The event concluded in the afternoon.
